Leading one the world's largest human-centered AI research initiatives

Since 2020, OptimalAI scientists have coordinated one the world's largest HCAI research initiatives

Overview and Objectives

Since 2020, the OptimalAI team has helped coordinate a research program to create new frameworks for Human-AI interaction. Collaborating with leading European research centers, universities and industry partners the program develops the fundamental research required to steer human-centered AI. Funded by the EU's €95.5 billion Horizon Europe fund, the research aims to develop AI systems that are ethical, trustworthy and enhance human capabilities, autonomy and self-determination. It addresses human-computer interaction, cognitive science and complexity science. These areas are crucial to creating AI systems that can 'understand' human behavior, adapt to complex environments and interact effectively in social settings whilst aligning with ethical standards and legal frameworks.

The Challenges

The profound changes brought about by AI mean that it could either enhance humanity or diminish it, enrich the human experience or supplant it, create new opportunities or make current jobs obsolete, and either spread well-being or concentrate power. It is crucial, therefore, that the AI revolution aligns with ethical, social, and legal standards. The primary challenge thus lies in crafting AI systems that can effectively "understand" and adapt to human nuances and complexities. Such systems should bolster human capabilities while respecting autonomy and self-determination, without stifling innovation. The project seeks to foster a research and innovation ecosystem that significantly benefits economies and societies by transcending traditional AI development silos

A New Framework for Human-AI Interaction

The program's 70 projects have yielded a new framework for Human-AI interaction which has led to the creation of the Advanced Course on AI, which provides a foundational curriculum on human-centered AI methodologies to the world leading AI scientists. The inaugural course was hosted by Turing Award winner Prof. Yoshua Bengio of Université de Montréal.
